Municipal and School Board Elections

Municipal and School Board Elections in Alberta take place on October 20th, 2025.

School Board Trustees set direction, and administrate spending from the budget provided by the provincial government.  Funding for education has been cut each year for three years, at a time when inflation was running at 4-6% per year.  Increases last year and this have not been able to make up for these damaging cuts. We have the lowest spending per student in Canada.

Classrooms are overcrowded and there are insufficient numbers of support staff and teachers.  Funding is also diminished for public education with huge increases of these public funds to support charter and private schools.  Public funds must go to support public education.

Nominations close on September 22, 2025.  Find out who’s running in your region.  Encourage those who would be good advocates for a stronger and better public education system to run.  For all nominees, find out what they stand for and what they will do if elected.  This is our opportunity to select those who care about public education in our communities.

Municipal elections impact our communities.  The council members are a voice for our communities and help support families to promote the welfare and interests of us all.  They work with school boards to develop programs that can support education.

We need to become informed, to ask questions and to attend town halls for both School Board Trustees and Municipal nominees.

Just as we stood together against the government mandate that restricted our ability to gain a fair wage, with many of us going on strike, we can make a difference in our own school divisions by finding strong nominees and standing together to elect them to these vital roles in local government.
